General Information

Bisacodyl is a diphenylmethane stimulant laxative which acts on contact with the mucosa of the large bowel to increase peristaltic activity and increase the formation of soft formed stools. The laxative effect occurs within 15-60 minutes of administration of the suppository.

Warnings

WARNINGS:
The suppositories should be used with caution in patients with rectal fissures or ulcerated haemorrhoids. Care should be also taken in patients with inflammatory bowel disease. Prolonged use of laxatives is undesirable and may lead to dependence. The correct management of uncomplicated constipation lies in correct diet, fluid intake and exercise. Patients being treated for this condition should therefore drink plenty of water and increase the fibre content of their diet.  Laxatives should not be used as part of a weight reduction programme. Bisacodyl Suppositories should not be swallowed.

Each suppository contains Bisacodyl B.P. 10mg.

Directions

USE IN PREGNANCY: CATEGORY A:
The use of Bisacodyl Suppositories should be avoided where possible during where first trimester of pregnancy. Frequent or excessive use during the remaining period of pregnancy is not recommended unless medically advised. The safety of Bisacodyl Suppositories in lactating women has not been categorically established. Category A - (Australian categorisation definition) Drugs which have been taken by a large number of pregnant women and women of child bearing age without any proven increase in the frequency of malformation or other direct or indirect harmful effects on the foetus having been observed.
ADVERSE EFFECTS:
The use of Bisacodyl Suppositories can occasionally cause rectal irritation. Repeated use may result in proctitis or sloughing of the epithelium. Prolonged use can result in diarrhoea with excessive loss of water and electrolytes, particularly potassium. There is also the possibility that an atonic, non-functioning colon may develop.
DOSAGE AND ADMINISTRATION:
Adults (including the elderly) and children over 10 years of age: Insert one suppository high into the rectum in the morning, or as advised by a physician. Avoid inserting the suppository into faecal matter as this will delay its action.
OVERDOSAGE:
Symptoms of overdosage are as described for adverse effects and may include diarrhoea with excessive loss of water and electrolytes, particularly potassium; the development of an atonic, nonfunctioning colon may occur.
